Changed my mind on prefab trusses after a Saturday that ran to 11 hours
I used to think cutting every rafter by hand was the only way to get a roof right. Two Saturdays ago I tried to frame a 16x20 shed roof solo out in my brother's yard in Boise, and what should have been a 5 hour job took 11 because I kept messing up the birdsmouth cuts and had to redo two boards. My neighbor walked over around hour 8, looked at my pile of scrap, and asked why I wasn't using trusses. He said he got his whole garage roof set in 90 minutes with two guys and a lift. I switched my mind right there, because losing a full day to save maybe $150 on lumber was a bad trade. The truss truck comes Thursday and I'm not touching a framing square again on this build. Curious if anyone here has run into trouble setting trusses solo, or is it really a two person job no matter what?
