My Tuesday grocery run somehow came out $18 under budget because the store had a double markdown on clearance meat.

I went in just needing milk and eggs but noticed the butcher had marked down a bunch of chicken and ground beef by 50% and then another 30% off with a yellow sticker, so I grabbed six packages and froze them all, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has luck hitting their local store at a specific time of day for those surprise deals?

...and suddenly my freezer looks like I'm prepping for the apocalypse. I swear those yellow sticker deals are like a drug, one hit and you're hooked on penny-pinching protein. Did you at least clear a path to the ice cream or is it just a solid block of beef now?

Mark_price, you gotta learn the freezer Tetris trick. I always keep a small bin or a milk crate flipped upside down in there. That way you stack the yellow sticker packs around it and still have a spot for the ice cream right in the middle. If you just cram it all in, you'll be eating ground beef for a week while the ice melts.

I noticed you didn't mention what day of the week you hit that double markdown. Around here, our local store has a butcher who puts out the first round of 50% off stickers on Monday mornings because thats when the weekend stock needs to move, and then the assistant manager comes through around 2pm on Tuesdays with the extra 30% yellow tags to clear out anything still sitting. I started going Tuesdays right after lunch and it's like clockwork now, I'm willing to bet your store has a similar hidden schedule if you ask the staff nicely. That freezer Tetris trick is solid advice too, but timing is the real secret nobody talks about.
