Fancy coffee beans turned into a $60 mistake last month

I splurged on a bag of single origin beans from a local roaster in Portland, thinking it would be a treat. Paid $24 for 12 ounces, which felt steep, but people rave about this place. Got it home, brewed it next morning, and it tasted like burnt toast to me. Tried different grind sizes and ratios for a week, gave up, and the bag went in the trash. That's $60 with the specialty filters and gooseneck kettle I also bought just for this. Has anyone else dropped cash on hype coffee and gone back to the cheap stuff?
