Bought a $70 "budget" rail pass in Rome and still paid $40 extra on buses
The pass only covered regional trains, so every city bus and metro ride came out of my own pocket for 8 days. Anyone actually made a rail pass save money, or is paying per ride the real move?
I mean yeah it stinks but is $40 over 8 days really a disaster? That's like 5 bucks a day, which is one coffee or half a bad sandwich in Rome. The real issue is you assumed "rail pass" meant everything, and honestly a lot of people make that same mistake because the names are confusing on purpose. Next time just do the math before you buy, figure out how many trains you'll actually take versus buses and metros, because in a lot of cities the local transit is cheap enough that a pass only pays off if you're moving between cities every day.
