Rant: A grocery store in my town put yellow stickers on 3 day old chicken and I almost fell for it
I stopped at the Food Lion on Market Street last Tuesday around 6pm and saw a whole shelf of chicken breasts marked down to $2.49 a pound with yellow stickers. I grabbed two packs before I flipped one over and saw the sell by date was that same day, which means they were already 5 days old when they hit the shelf. Does anyone else check the dates on markdown meat or do you just grab and go?
So the sell by date was the same day you bought it and that means it was 5 days old? That math isn't adding up for me. Sell by dates are usually about 1 to 2 days after the pack date, so that chicken was probably 2 or 3 days old, not 5. Yeah it's not fresh off the truck but stores mark stuff down when it's close to the date, that's the whole point. You cook it that night or freeze it and you're fine. I've eaten plenty of yellow sticker meat and never got sick.
