Picked a manual reel mower over gas for my lawn

I had to choose between a gas mower and one of those old push reel mowers for my yard in Portland. The reel mower was $80 compared to $300 for a basic gas one, so I gave it a shot. Honestly took a bit more elbow grease on the first cut, but my yard looks cleaner and I'm not dealing with gas fumes or repairs. Has anyone else tried switching to a manual mower and noticed a difference in lawn health?

You know what, @jade_johnson, you're right about the noise thing. My buddy Mark switched to a reel mower last spring and said it was the most peaceful lawn work he ever did. He lives in a tight neighborhood where people are always on edge, but now his neighbors actually wave at him instead of yelling over the engine. He told me his grass looked healthier after a few weeks, too, something about the clean cut instead of tearing like gas blades do. The main thing for him was that his wife stopped complaining about the smell and the cost of gas every time he mowed. He did have to sharpen the blade once, but he said it took maybe ten minutes with a simple tool. So between the savings and the quiet, he says he never wants to go back to gas.

Less noise means I can actually hear my neighbors complain about other stuff.

Oh man, my friend Tim bought one and then his dog ran off with the grass catcher!
