That time I swore succulent soil was overpriced until my jade plant died
I used to grab any old potting mix for my succulents, figuring it was all dirt, you know? Then my jade plant rotted after 3 weeks because the store-brand stuff held too much water. A friend in Denver told me to try a $12 bag of cactus mix from a local nursery, and now everything's thriving. Has anyone else found that cheap soil backfires big time?

Bought cheap soil once. Lost three aloe plants and swore off it.

Cheap soil holds too much moisture, drainage is everything with succulents.

Read somewhere that a lot of the big brand soils actually have moisture retaining crystals in them that are terrible for succulents. Maybe it's just me but I started mixing in extra perlite and sand with everything I use now, even the pricier bags. Seems like the drainage really is the make or break for keeping them alive.
