That moss propagation trick I picked up at the Portland Garden Show
I was struggling to get moss to grow on a shady clay patch in my backyard for about 4 years. Tried everything from buttermilk blends to store bought spores with zero luck. Then an old guy at the show told me to just mix some local moss with plain yogurt and paint it on a damp rock, and it actually took off within 2 months. Anyone else have luck with weird DIY moss recipes?

Ha, fair question. I meant the yogurt you eat - just plain yogurt from the grocery store works great for me.

Actually the yogurt thing works because the live cultures feed the soil bacteria just like they feed your gut bacteria. Might sound gross but it's basically giving your plants a probiotic smoothie. The calcium in the yogurt also helps prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes which is a big problem for a lot of gardeners. Just make sure you use plain yogurt with no sugar or flavors since that can attract ants and other pests. Dilute it with water first or you might end up with a sticky mess on your plants.
