Spent $85 on a grow light in 2019 and my seedlings have never forgiven me
Back when I first got into starting seeds inside, I grabbed an $85 LED grow light from a garden center in Boise because the guy there swore it was all I needed. It burned the tips off my tomato starts in four days flat, and I stood there in my kitchen just staring at them. A retired botanist at my local plant swap told me the light was fine but I had it about ten inches too close and left it on 16 hours a day. These days I run it at 14 hours and keep it two feet off the leaves, and my starts have been happy for about three seasons now. Still, that first week stung, mostly because I trusted the man in the store instead of reading a single thing about distance and timing. Curious how far off the shelf you all keep your plain shop lights for seed starting?
