A guy at the Austin botany meetup taught me to water my ferns from the bottom, and my crispy maidenhair came back in 3 weeks
I went to a small botany meetup at Zilker Botanical Garden last month and mentioned how my maidenhair fern always turned brown no matter what I did. This older guy named Ray told me to stop pouring water on top of the fronds and instead set the pot in a tray of water for 20 minutes once or twice a week. I tried it on my saddest fern, the one that was down to about 4 green stems, and within 3 weeks it pushed out 6 new fronds. Turns out the rhizomes hate staying wet up top but love a deep drink from below. Has anyone else switched to bottom watering for ferns, and do you do it for other plants too?
Bottom watering shows up everywhere once you spot it, like how bread goes stale faster in the fridge and nobody tells you. Same idea with ferns, you were feeding the leaves when the roots were the ones starving. Tried it on my pothos and snake plant too and both quit throwing drama fits.
