Appreciation post: I tried wheat paste instead of PVA on a cookbook repair and the spine did something weird
I picked up a beat up 1970s church cookbook at a garage sale in Dayton for $2 and the spine was hanging on by threads. Decided to try wheat paste instead of my usual PVA just to see what would happen, and the stuff dried way stiffer than I expected, almost like the boards got locked in place. Two days later I opened it and the whole text block shifted because I had zero flexibility left in that spine. Lesson learned: wheat paste is great for some things but you can't just swap it in and expect the same feel. Anyone here mix paste and PVA for a repair like that, and what ratio actually works?
Used to figure you could just swap one paste for the other and call it done, but this exact kind of thing changed my mind on that real quick. The mix is the way to go, something like 3 parts PVA to 1 part wheat paste keeps a little give in the spine so it still opens without flopping around. Straight paste has its place on paper hinges and corners, just not on a whole spine you actually need to move.
