Tried learning a heavy strategy game solo before teaching my group

I spent 3 nights learning 'Spirit Island' alone and then realized I taught my friends all the wrong rules because the solo setup is completely different from multiplayer, has anyone else tripped up by learning a game solo first?

Oh man, I've definitely been there with a different game! Did you end up having to start the whole session over once you caught the mistake, or did you just wing it with the wrong rules for the night? I'm curious which specific rules caught you off guard between solo and multiplayer, because Spirit Island is dense enough without extra confusion.

Isn't it funny how we'll meticulously learn something inside and out, only to realize we've been doing it wrong the whole time, kind of like how I once spent a year perfecting a recipe before finding out I was misreading the measurements?

That recipe thing reminds me of the time I tried to learn to fix my own car. Watched like twenty videos on changing the oil filter, read the manual twice, got all the tools lined up. Spent a whole Saturday getting it done only to find out I'd been tightening the drain plug in the wrong direction for years. Car didn't explode or anything, but the look on my neighbor's face when he saw me cranking it the other way was priceless. Now I just pay someone else to do it and call it a day.
