Serious question, my anvil face cracked and I patched it wrong

My 120 pound anvil from a farm sale in Ohio developed a hairline crack right near the hardy hole last month. I thought I could just weld it up with some mild steel rod and keep going, figured it was no big deal. Boy was I wrong, the patch popped off on the third hit of a leaf taper and took a chunk of the face with it. Now I am looking at a 4 inch crater and realizing I should have just talked to a real machinist about resurfacing first. Anyone else tried to cheap-fix their anvil face and ended up making it worse, or is it just me being stubborn?
