Three episodes in and I hated The Wire. Then someone told me to stick with it until episode 6. That was last month.

Dude, my buddy literally quit after four episodes then binged the whole thing two weeks later.

Yeah, I read somewhere that the showrunner actually planned the first four episodes to be a slow burn on purpose. They wanted people to feel like giving up right before the payoff in episode 5 and 6. Sounds like your buddy fell for it perfectly, which is kind of hilarious in retrospect.
