Copper anti seize on bottom bracket threads, night and day difference after 6 months
Pulled the BB on my winter commuter after 6 months of salt and slush and the threads came out clean, no galling at all. Two winters back I used plain grease on the same bike and ended up chasing the shell with a tap because the cups had basically welded themselves in. The salt here in Minneapolis eats through regular grease in about 8 weeks, but the copper stuff stayed put and the cups broke loose with a normal amount of force. Anyone else running copper on threaded BBs, or is there something better for wet salty roads?
Read a post on a bike forum a while back from a guy in Buffalo who ran copper on his commuter for three winters straight. He said the trick is to clean the threads with a wire brush first, then lay it on thick. The copper flakes in the paste act like tiny ball bearings when you go to break the cups loose. Regular grease just washes out once the road spray gets in there. Park Tool even sells a copper based version now, though the hardware store stuff works fine.
