Wasted $60 on a fancy cake strip thing, my grandma's old towel trick works better
Bought those $60 silicone baking strips at a Williams Sonoma in Dallas after seeing them on some baking account, and my cakes still came out with domed tops every single time. My grandma in Waco just wraps wet strips cut from an old dish towel around her pans, and her layers come out flat as a board. Has anyone else tried the towel trick, or am I just bad at using the silicone ones?
Check the water temp on those towel strips because most people soak them in cold and that's the whole problem. Grandma's trick works because cold water takes way longer to turn to steam, so the pan edge stays cooler for the first 20 minutes while the center sets. Your silicone strips probably aren't wet enough or you're skipping the soak, so blaming the $60 is a bit unfair.
