Just realized my roommate's 'clean' dishes were breeding mold for 11 months

I found black spots on my coffee mug one morning and traced it back to the dishwasher. My roommate had been rinsing plates with cold water and calling it clean since I moved in last October. I checked our rack with a flashlight and counted 14 cups with gunk stuck to the bottom. She said the hot cycle 'ruins the plastic' so she never ran it. I ran a full load with vinegar and citric acid yesterday, and the filter looked like a swamp. Has anyone else had a roommate quietly disable the dishwasher settings?
