Stopped at a community garden tour and got schooled on my own backyard
Last Saturday I wandered into the Maplewood community garden open house, just to be nosy. Some old timer named Ed showed me his squash rows and pointed out my soil was probably packed too tight. He had me squeeze a handful of my dirt and it crumbled like a brick, no worms anywhere. I went home and dug up a 3x3 patch, mixed in two bags of compost and some perlite. Now I finally see why my carrots have been stunted for the last two seasons. Anyone else had a random stranger at a garden event give you a fix that actually worked?
