Had to pick between two tomato plants for my small space
I only had room for one more plant in my raised bed, so it came down to a 'Sun Gold' cherry or a 'Cherokee Purple' heirloom. I went with the 'Sun Gold' because my neighbor said they produce a ton of fruit all summer. It's been about six weeks and I'm already getting a handful of sweet orange tomatoes every other day. Anyone have a favorite tomato for small gardens?

Consider the sheer weight of the fruit when you pick. I grew a Cherokee Purple once in a big pot and it nearly tipped over when the tomatoes got heavy. Those big heirlooms are like baseballs, so your container needs to be seriously sturdy, not just wide. Sun Golds are light enough that a simple cage does the job.

Oh wow, I used to just think bigger pots were better.

Ever think about how the soil weight changes when it's wet? That plus the fruit is a lot for a pot to hold.
