My string lights fell down 3 times before I finally used those screw-in cable clips

They kept ripping out of the wood fence during wind gusts in my Denver backyard until I drilled pilot holes and used outdoor rated clips from Ace for $8, has anyone found a better way to keep them up through actual weather?

Cable clips with the screw-in base are pretty solid, but I heard a tip from a neighbor who uses those clear plastic zip tie mounts. You stick the adhesive pad on the fence, thread the zip tie through the mount, and then strap the lights to the mount. Might not hold up in heavy Denver wind for years, but for $2 at a hardware store it's worth testing a few spots. Your pilot hole method sounds way more permanent though.

Yeah exactly, I was watching some youtube video where a guy tested those adhesive zip tie mounts against screw-in clips side by side during a storm and the adhesives pretty much all failed within the first real wind gust. But @norab21 mentioned the pilot holes thing and I totally agree, that extra step of pre-drilling really stops the wood from splitting over time. My fence is that old pressure treated stuff so the screws just strip out if I don't drill first. I've also heard of people using small stainless steel eye hooks and winding the wire around them, supposedly holds up better than clips because the hook catches the string even if the plastic part breaks.

Pilot holes were the only thing that finally worked for me too.
