Took a shortcut on the Salkantay trek and almost got lost for 3 hours
I followed a faint side trail near the Salkantay Pass thinking it would shave off a mile, but it dead-ended on a cliff with no view markers. Has anyone else tried skipping sections of that route and ended up way off track?

Guess you found the scenic route to nowhere, congrats.

I got lost like that once driving through the Smoky Mountains on a family trip. We ended up on a gravel road that just kept going and going with no turnoffs. Finally I pulled over, pulled out my old paper map, and figured out where we were. Sometimes you just have to stop and get your bearings before things get worse.

The "scenic route to nowhere" part got me. My buddy Tom took that literally once. He was trying to find a shortcut to a fishing spot near the Delaware Water Gap and ended up on this old logging road that just turned into mud and rocks. His car got stuck for like three hours until some guy in a lifted truck pulled him out. He still talks about it like it was an adventure, but I remember him calling me pissed off and hungry.
