Appreciation post: That time I had to pick the restaurant that just opened over my go-to diner downtown

Decided to try the new pho place on 5th instead of my usual banh mi spot last Tuesday, ended up sitting next to a loud date that asked my opinion on their dipping sauce, and now I can't even look at that diner's menu the same way.

Three tables at that pho place have the same dipping sauce, and the odds of running into the same couple again are basically zero. Maybe the universe was telling you to branch out a bit, and the diner's menu is just the same predictable rotation. Sometimes a loud stranger's unsolicited opinion is the push you need to realize your old standby was just comfortable, not good.

That new pho place's broth was pretty watery when I went there last week, and the couple you mentioned probably just liked the novelty factor of annoying a stranger. Your banh mi spot had years of perfecting their bread and pickled veggies, which is way harder to get right than some trendy sauce. Comfort food gets a bad rap but there's a reason places stay open for decades, and it's not because they're just coasting on nostalgia.

Whoa, wait, they actually asked a stranger's opinion on sauce?!
