Old timing light vs. the fancy scan tool, sometimes I miss the basics
Honestly, I remember setting timing on a 5.0 Mustang back in 2007 with an old $40 timing light and a vacuum gauge. We'd spend an hour adjusting the distributor by ear and watching the marks. Now I just plug in a $2,000 scan tool and the ECU does most of the work, but it feels less like actually fixing something sometimes. Last week I pulled out the analog gauge again on a mid-90s F-150 and it ran smoother than the digital readout suggested. Anyone else keep a basic tool around just for the feel of it, or am I just stuck in my ways?
