Why I gave up on the usual way to blend clearcoat

Most shops around here blend clearcoat by feathering it way out, but I kept getting a visible line on pearl white paints. I figured out that if I mix a tiny bit of base coat into the clear and spray a wider, softer edge, it disappears completely. Your mileage may vary, but for me, this fix worked on three tough jobs last month.

My buddy had the same issue with pearl white last year. He mixed a little base into the clear like you said and it fixed his blend line.

Been there, that pearl blend took forever to get right.

Is mixing base into the clear really the best fix for blend lines? I've found that can sometimes make the clear coat look cloudy down the road. It seems better to focus on getting the pearl layer itself to match more closely. I like to adjust how thin the paint is and how I move the gun when spraying. That approach has given me cleaner blends without extra steps in the clear.
