Still seeing people sand filler with 36 grit and wondering why it sags

Was at a shop in Fresno last week helping a buddy with a quarter panel job. This guy next to us starts sanding his filler work with 36 grit and I wanted to say something. He ends up with wavy spots and tells me the filler went bad. I showed him a block of 80 grit and he looked at me like I had two heads. After he tried it, he said he had been doing it that way for 10 years. Has anyone else run into guys who refuse to step up grit numbers on filler?

Hold up, is finishing filler really THAT deep where we gotta police grit numbers? Some people just wanna get the shape close and move on without overthinking it.

I did 180 grit on my last filler job and it came out fine, nobody's called me out on it yet.
