Graveyard for old phone batteries" is a scary way to put it, @oscar743. Is the ammo can just for storage, or do you actually put them in there to charge too?

Honestly you're probably overthinking this. Li-ion batteries are pretty stable unless you physically puncture them or hook them up to a charger that's way too powerful for them. I've got old vape batteries in a cardboard box in my closet that have been fine for years.

My buddy Dave learned this the hard way. He kept a bunch of old phone batteries in a shoebox under his bed for like two years. Then one day he hears this weird hissing sound and goes to check. The box was smoking and one of the batteries had puffed up like a balloon and burst. @oscar743, you're smart keeping that ammo can on the patio. I've heard that after a battery swells up a little, it can still catch fire from normal heat or a tiny short. Dave was lucky his mattress didn't go up. Now I just recycle old batteries at the store as soon as they start showing any wear.

Yeah, that'll do it. My junk drawer was a graveyard for old phone batteries and those cheap vape pens. Now I keep them in an old ammo can on the patio. Not taking chances after my buddy's hoverboard charger melted.
