I finally saw the sun do the same thing to two trucks, fresh clear vs 40 year old lacquer
Six months back I did a 1966 C10 in single stage black and the owner wanted that dead flat old school look with no buff. Fast forward to last Tuesday and a regular dropped off a 1985 square body he had repainted in base clear about 8 years ago, and the way the sun hit both panels in my shop door was night and day. The single stage just drank the light and went gray, almost like it had a thick skin, while the clear coat threw a hard glare right back at me. I get why the old timers stick with single stage for period correct work, it hides sand scratches and you can spot blend a fender without a booth, but the clear on that 85 still looked wet after almost a decade outside. Part of me thinks the flatness reads more honest and part of me thinks we are just making more work for the next guy who has to strip it. What I keep going back and forth on is whether a guy spraying a keeper car should chase the original look or the longer lasting one. Curious if you all lean single stage or clear when it is a truck that actually gets driven and parked outside.
