A painter named Sal told me to quit sanding filler at 180 grit and I ignored him for 2 years
Sal worked the booth next to mine at a place off Van Buren in Phoenix. He kept telling me to block my filler out at 80 and 120 and leave the 180 for primer, said going too fine just burnished the mud and hid the lows. I nodded and kept doing it my way because my panels looked smooth under the shop lights. Then a black Silverado came back after 6 months with every sand scratch showing through the base like a roadmap. I stripped it, redid the filler his way, and the thing laid out flat on the first pass. Now I keep a piece of 80 on the block and let the primer do the fine work. Anybody else got an old timer tip they fought for a while before it clicked?
