Dropped $270 on a light pollution filter and my first shot came out pitch black
I finally bought a light pollution filter for my camera last week, $270 for a clip in one that was supposed to help shoot nebulas from my backyard. I live just outside Columbus so the sky glows orange all night, and I figured this thing would be the answer. First night out I set everything up, pointed at Orion, took a 3 minute exposure, and got a completely black frame. I thought the lens cap was on. It was not. Turns out the filter shifted my white balance so far that I had no idea what I was looking at, and I had the gain cranked way down. After about two hours of messing with settings in the cold, I finally got a shot where I could actually see the nebula, and honestly it was not much better than what I got without the filter. Now I am stuck wondering if I wasted the money or if I just need to learn how to use the thing. Has anyone here had a filter make things worse before it got better? What settings did you end up using?
