A retired engineer's advice on stacking photos saved my moon shots

Last month I posted a single frame of the full moon and a retired engineer commented that I should try stacking 50 frames instead. I figured he was just some old guy talking, but I gave it a shot with free software. The detail in the craters was way sharper than anything I got before, even with my basic 8 inch scope. He also told me to use a higher ISO and shorter shutter speed, which I thought would be too noisy, but the stacking cleaned it all up. Has anyone else found that one piece of advice from a stranger changed their whole approach to imaging?

Did the stacking trick work as smooth with bright planets as it did on the moon? I tried something similar with Jupiter a few months back after a random guy at a star party told me to bump my exposure way down. It ended up being a mess of fuzzy bands, but honestly just messing with the settings taught me more than any tutorial ever did.
