A guy at the Salt Lake City star party let me look through his 10 inch dob and I finally get why people chase dark skies
I went to a star party out at a dark site near Salt Lake City last weekend mostly just to see what it was about. I had been shooting the moon from my backyard for about 4 months with a cheap 70mm scope and thought my shots were decent. This older guy set up a 10 inch dobsonian next to me and pointed it at the Ring Nebula, and I actually said wow out loud when I looked in. The ring was this tiny smoke circle with a clear hole in the middle, and in my scope it had just been a fuzzy dot. He told me to point my camera at it anyway and stack 40 short shots instead of 5 long ones. First try with that method got me more color than everything I shot all summer. Anyone here shooting from a light polluted yard, how many subs do you stack before it stops helping?
