My neighbor in Billings showed me a trick with a frozen pipe that saved me $600
Back in January we hit a cold snap here in Billings, and one morning the kitchen sink wouldn't drain at all. I stood there with a plunger for twenty minutes before I figured out the trap arm under the house was frozen solid. My neighbor Dale, who is 72 and has lived in the same house since 1978, came over when he saw me crawling under the floor with a hair dryer. He told me to stop pointing heat at the pipe itself and instead wrap an old towel around it and pour hot water over the towel, slow, so the heat spreads out instead of cracking the metal. I did that for about 40 minutes and the water finally started moving. Dale said he learned that from his dad, who used to do the same thing with burlap sacks. The plumber I called the next day quoted me $600 just to come out and said I got lucky. Now I keep two towels and a big thermos of hot water in the garage every winter. Does anyone else have an old trick like that from a neighbor that still works better than the modern fix?
