A retired digger in Cyprus swore the pottery shards were Roman, so I spent 3 days sorting them wrong
He told me the red glaze meant 2nd century, so I bagged and labeled 400 pieces that way for the trench log. Turns out the local museum curator took one look and said they were 19th century copies made for tourists, and the glaze was just lead paint. Has anyone else had a field ID fall apart the second a real expert glanced at it?
