An elderly lady in Duluth showed me more about dishwasher pumps in 5 minutes than 5 years on the job

She had a 1980s KitchenAid that was still running but made this scraping noise. Instead of me fixing it, she grabbed a butter knife and showed me how to pop the pump cover off right there on her linoleum floor. Has anyone else had a customer teach them something they should have already known?

Man, I used to think I knew EVERYTHING about dishwashers after years of fixing them. But @riley_miller25 that butter knife trick totally cleared the scraping noise - it was just a tiny piece of a broken glass jammed under the pump impeller. She showed me how to pop the cover off with the knife and flick it out in like 30 seconds. Honestly humbled me real quick.

Did that butter knife trick actually clear the scraping noise or was it something else stuck in there?

Yeah that butter knife trick is legit! I've actually done it twice now on different dishwashers. First time it was a piece of a bottle cap that somehow got past the filter, second time it was just a really stubborn food chunk that hardened into basically plastic. The trick is butter knives are thin enough to slide under the impeller cover without breaking the tabs but thick enough to actually pry stuff loose. Way cheaper than calling someone out for a service call just to pop a cover off.
