At the local con, I tried to explain the plot of Evangelion to my grandma.

We were at Anime Expo in LA last year, and she kept asking if Shinji was a nice boy who just needed a hug. I mean, I spent 20 minutes trying to explain instrumentality and existential dread before she just patted my hand and said 'It sounds like they all need a good nap.' Has anyone else had a family member just completely miss the point of a show you love?

Forget the nap, the whole point is that some pain can't be fixed that way.

Honestly, your grandma might be onto something though. It's a cartoon about giant robots, and sometimes we fans take the deep stuff way too seriously. Maybe they all did just need a nap and a snack.
