Watched a guy in Tulsa meter his panel with a $12 multimeter, and I finally ditched the old buzz box
I used to swear by my old analog meter for checking panel voltage. Been using that thing since I started doing installs back in 2009. Then two weeks ago I was on a job in Tulsa, doing a takeover on a house with a DSC panel that kept throwing zone faults, and the other installer pulls out this little $12 digital multimeter from his back pocket. I kind of rolled my eyes at first, thinking a cheapo wouldn't read anything useful on a security loop. But he clipped it on and got me a clean 13.7 volts on the aux power in about five seconds. My old meter was bouncing all over the place and I couldn't get a steady reading. Come to find out the panel was fine but the keypad was dragging the bus down, and his meter caught that dip that mine just smoothed right over. Now I'm carrying one of those little guys in my pouch too. Anyone else switch off the old gear after seeing something simple work better than what you trusted for a decade?
