Walked into a bank lobby last Friday and spotted a DSC panel mounted sideways
Was there for 5 minutes waiting on a teller and couldn't stop looking at it, all the zone wires were bunched up at the bottom. Anyone else see installers do this for no real reason?

harper693's dead giveaway line hit home for me. I think we're just seeing the same laziness everywhere, like how people cram their trash into an overflowing can instead of taking it out.

But what if they're not being lazy, what if they're just following the path of least resistance to protect their own liability? I've seen guys deliberately pinch wires or leave slack because they figure that way if someone has to move the panel later, it's easier to tear out without fighting a perfect bundle. Not saying it's right, but there's a method to the madness sometimes. It's like they're thinking ahead to when the customer inevitably remodels and blames them for making it too clean.

You ever notice how some installers treat the panel like it's a piece of art rather than something that needs to be level? In my experience, I've seen panels mounted sideways in closets where there was plenty of room for it to be straight. The zone wires being bunched up at the bottom is a dead giveaway they didn't want to take the extra few minutes to route them neatly. Take this with a grain of salt, but I'd bet the door was propped open and they just tossed the wires in the can.
