Rant: My air fryer burger patties came out dry as sawdust after I preheated it too long at a campground cookout in Vermont last fall

That "dry as sawdust" line hit me right in the gut, I had a similar thing happen with chicken thighs at a beach picnic last summer. I mean, I cranked the grill way too long trying to get the coals perfect and ended up with leather on a bun. Sometimes it's the simple stuff like timing that gets you, idk why we keep trusting ourselves with camping cooking.

Man I've been there so many times it's basically a tradition for me at this point. I think I've single-handedly kept the local leather industry going with my "campfire chicken" disasters. Last time I tried to do burgers on a portable grill at the lake, I forgot to oil the grates and ended up with these sad little hockey pucks that bounced when I dropped them. You'd think after the 50th time I'd learn to just set a timer and walk away.

That "dry as sawdust" line really got me too. My buddy Jake tried to impress his new girlfriend by grilling steaks over a fire pit last fall. He spent like an hour getting the wood perfect, burning through half a bag of charcoal, and then just threw the steaks on way too early. They came out like shoe leather on the outside and raw in the middle, basically inedible. She tried to be nice about it but ended up feeding hers to his dog under the table. He still brings it up like its a funny story but you can tell it still stings a little.
