Hot take: my brother in law said air fryers are just tiny ovens, and he's kind of right but also totally missing it
He said this at a cookout in July while I was reheating wings I'd made that morning. I get the oven comparison, but a real oven takes 12 to 15 minutes to heat up and my air fryer is cooking in 2. The point isn't that it's a new kind of cooking, it's that it's fast and I actually use it on a Tuesday night instead of ordering out. If you're only using yours for frozen fries you're wasting it, but the oven snobs aren't winning me over either. What's the one thing you make in yours that people say can't work in an air fryer?
My oven takes 14 minutes to hit 425, I timed it last week. That part is not a debate. But the whole "it's just a tiny oven" thing falls apart when you look at how the heat moves. A real oven cooks from all sides with still air. An air fryer blasts hot air down at high speed, so the top of the food gets hit way harder. That is why wings come out crispy outside and still juicy inside. Try getting that in the big oven in under 20 minutes on a Tuesday.
