Was dead wrong about AI writing tools until last month

I always thought AI writing stuff was just fancy word generators that couldn't write anything real. Then my boss made me try Jasper for a batch of 30 product descriptions for our online store last month. On a whim I fed it some rough notes about a specific coffee grinder we sell and it gave me back a description that actually sounded like how I talk to customers. Has anyone else had that moment where some AI tool surprised you when you gave it really specific details instead of vague prompts?

My first real surprise with an AI tool was actually with Claude last February when I needed 12 different email subject lines for a client's campaign. I gave it really specific stuff like "this is for a boutique pet store that only sells eco-friendly toys" and "the owner has this quirky sense of humor where she compares everything to coffee". It gave me back lines I actually used, which I never expected. The thing with the "junior intern" idea is close but honestly I think that undersells it a bit because a real intern would ask you clarifying questions when something doesnt make sense. An AI just tries to guess what you wanted and moves on, so you have to catch those mistakes yourself. Thats the part that trips people up the most I think.

Oh man, I had that exact same thing happen! I saw this interview with a writer who said the trick is treating AI like a junior copywriter who needs EXTREMELY clear instructions. Like you cant just say "write something good" you gotta say "write this in the voice of a grumpy mechanic who loves his tools" or whatever. I was skeptical too but when I gave it really messy bullet points about why I personally liked a product it came back with something I actually wanted to read. The detail thing is huge most people are just typing garbage prompts and getting garbage back. Its wild how much better it gets when you treat it like you're explaining something to a smart intern who just started.

Point out that most people dont realize the AI is literally just guessing what word comes next based on patterns it saw. The whole "junior intern" thing is good but theres a bigger problem people treat it like a magic answer box when its really just a fancy autocomplete. Give it garbage patterns it spits back garbage patterns. Give it really specific patterns with your own opinions and feelings mixed in and it has something to actually work with. The people who get good results are the ones who understand its just predicting text not thinking critically about your product.
