Warning: that 'free' AutoML tool on Product Hunt scraped our whole training set and I caught it 3 weeks later
Last month I was messing around with a cheap AutoML tool I found on Product Hunt to speed up a small image sorter for my side gig, and I fed it about 4,200 labeled photos plus my little CSV of labels. Seemed fine at first, the dashboard even showed a nice accuracy chart. Then a buddy of mine who works at a shop in Austin pinged me and said he saw my exact file names showing up in some public demo gallery on the company's site. I went back and read the terms, and buried in there was a line saying anything you upload can be used to 'improve the service,' which basically means they keep it. I pulled everything, deleted the project, and rebuilt the whole thing with a local model on my own machine that night. I'm not saying every free tool is shady, but if you're feeding customer data or anything you own into a cloud tool you didn't read the fine print on, go check right now. Has anyone else run into a tool that quietly keeps your uploads? What did you switch to?
