Oh man that's exactly how I got converted too. Blade grinders just smash the beans unevenly, a cheap hand grinder will give you way more consistent grounds. Once you taste the difference you never go back.

Read somewhere that the uneven grind from blades can actually cause channeling in your espresso if you're using a machine. Basically the water finds the path of least resistance through the powder, leaving big chunks underextracted and fines overextracted. Made sense when I thought about it. Switched to a cheap hand grinder myself a couple years back. Never looked at my coffee maker the same way again.
