Client critique about my Facebook ad copy made me rethink everything

A client in Phoenix told me my headlines were too salesy and sounded like a used car lot. She said 'I feel like you're shouting at me, not talking to me.' At first I got defensive, but I went back and looked at my last 5 campaigns. My click-through rates were dropping month over month. After I rewrote everything to sound more like a helpful neighbor instead of a pushy salesman, our conversion rate jumped 22 percent. Has anyone else had a client call you out on something that actually improved your work?

Whoa, 22 percent? I'd take that kind of wake-up call any day.

Had a client basically tell me the same thing last year. She said my copy read like I was trying to sell her a used minivan with a rebuilt transmission lmao. I was pissed at first but she was totally right. I went back and looked at my A/B test results from the previous 6 months and the louder, more aggressive versions actually had way lower engagement rates. Switched to a more conversational tone where I'd write like I was explaining something to a friend over coffee and our cost per lead dropped like 30 percent. Clients calling you out sucks in the moment but sometimes they're just seeing what the data was already telling you.
